school:
tulle rules
a picked edict
chance dance
exterior warriors
lionic
interior either-or
iconic
chastity requires tenacity
kohl limbers plasticity
gel sells and retells
fixes the flick
nixes the pick
eyes so dewy
not yet shrewy
full of young hunger
at the height of unencumbered
This is fantastic–rhyme and rhythm are superb and “eyes so dewy not yet shrewy” tell it all!
Thanks, Ginny. I think it needs some work, but I sure had fun playing with the words!
Oh my WORD. I looooove this! I am going to read it out loud, many times today. The word bumps in here are fantastic, Anne Catherine. I can’t even pick a favorite. Okay, it’s these lines:
“chastity requires tenacity
kohl limbers plasticity”
But I love it all!
This is weird – I responded to this comment the other day – I wonder where it went??? Anyway, I said…thanks for the compliment – it means a lot coming from the reigning Queen of Word Bumping! π
In case you’re keeping tech score, I never got the original response; just this one. π
Really strange… I guess it’s somewhere out there flying around with all those stray socks π
This is totally awesome!!! Sometimes rhyme turns me off, but it is so perfect here. π
Love these:
“exterior warriors”
“interior either-or”
“chastity requires tenacity kohl limbers plasticity gel sells and retells fixes the flick nixes the pick”
“at the height of unencumbered” (my favorite)
I love that the tone is lighthearted and fun but the meaning is heavy and deep, especially “interior either-or,” as if all that matters is what’s on the outside. This makes me think of the movie Clueless (which I have memorized). Great job, Anne Katherine.
Do you remember when everyone used to wear a comb (or a pick) in their back pocket? That was the epitome of coolness. For guys, I think. But I was still a young tomboy then and I so admired the extreme style!
Anyway, I had fun w/ the rhyme – I know what you mean about rhyme, but I wanted to try something different as I usually shy away from it. And I still think it needs a bit more pizazz so to speak, but I think it’s one I need to come back to it after awhile.
Thanks, as always, for the inspiration and for your reading — much appreciated π
I saw a guy with a pick in his hair at the Dollar Store the other day. It made me think of you. π
HA! Yes, the Dollar Store would be the place to see that!
I wasn’t with the in-crowd in Middle/Jr or High School – you have capture the drama of the jocks and fashion plates! Some were innocent for a while anyway. I do remember those comb picks. Some sticking out of heads too!
My offering is a short story verse:

I wasn’t with the in-crowd either, but I do remember lots! Thanks so much for reading and I will head over to your site soon!
Just popping by to say “hi” and to see if you’ve written anything new. π
Hello, little comment? Did you really just go to spam again?
Hmmm. This one appeared. So weird. So anyway, write me a poem! π
So sorry I haven’t responded! I will write something soon. Summer is just crazy busy around here! But I so appreciate you checking in – you are very inspiring!
Oh, it’s okay. I know you’re busy. And I hope you’re having a wonderful summer. I just miss you and your stories, precious. π
I am way late in commenting, but I love this one. It reminds me of a very cool rap song (and I mean that in the very best way), it has this incredibly cool musical rhythm. Love your poems and hope summer is treating you well!!
Thanks so much, Alexandra – and no worries – I am chronically late myself in so many areas…. I do not dare judge π
Sooooo…I have popped over to say two things:
I cannot hear or read the word “tulle” and not think of you.
And also: write me something new. Pretty please?
If you need a word list, I could be your new supplier…
first one’s free. π
I will try. However, I do not consider myself a poet in any real sense of the word! I’m more of a fiction writer, or so I hope one day! Thanks for the encouragement — it’s a true sign of your very generous spirit!
Pieces of fiction are welcome, also. You could email them to me. π I could oooo and ahhhhh and encourage you. I just miss your voice, that’s all.
And you could thump me between the eyes every once in awhile and remind me that I have started a YA novel. That deserves to be worked on, at the very least, and perhaps finished.
I would love to read some of your YA novel. I just cleaned out my older daughter’s room and packed up a ton of her YA novels. I will just say this: I hope yours is original. In other words, just glancing their titles they all seemed to be about the same stuff. Which I suppose is obviously what sells. And perhaps is what people want to read. But I hope you will have the magic formula of being what people want to read and perhaps following some unique veins.
Thanks once again for the encouragement! I do need a kick in the pants!
Oh, this is wonderful — perfectly captured and painted! Now that I’ve found you, I’ll be back to read more. π
Oh, my – thanks for reading! I don’t write here very often – so you don’t have to worry about visiting. I am just so glad De exposed me to your blog. I need to sign up to follow. I do so enjoy reading others and hope to be one day inspired to write more myself.
I so appreciate your visit!
Pamela, until she decides to start penning poems again (pretty pretty please?), you will find Anne Katherine’s comments to be among the most insightful and poetic you’ve ever received.
You are so sweet, De! I will try to get inspired!
Hi, there. Just popping over again, to be sure you haven’t secretly been writing poems. I miss your voice. And I appreciate your loyal following and comments more than you will ever, ever know.
